Welcome to another season of fantasy football. If you are like me, and lord help you if you are, then you enjoy crunching some numbers. This is the place where I will make use of all the stats I have kept through the years by trying to find meaning in all those seemingly useless numbers. Hopefully this will become a regular feature at the league website. So sit back and enjoy.

Draft Recap

Color Commentary selected eight players who were in the top ten in fantasy points in 2004 at their respective positions, tops in the league. Those picks were Plummer (7th QB), Brady (9th QB), Holmes (9th RB), C. Johnson (9th WR), Franks (10th TE), Vinatieri (1st K), D. Edwards (2nd Def), R. Harrison (5th Def).

Conquest, BOFD, !oohaY, and Bordeaux all had seven of these picks. Bad Team had six, while Da Bears, Bushwood, and Raging Bucs each had five. Surprisingly, the $h!t Kickers only had one, Edgerrin James.

What does it all mean? Not much.

Much was made, however, of Da Bears’ surprising selection of Donavan McNabb in the first round. But a quick look at the past league champions reveals that having an elite quarterback has been important. 2001 Champion Frankfurt had Rams gunslinger Kurt Warner at the helm. Red Taylor, the 2002 winner, had Donavan McNabb and after McNabb’s injury, Trent Green came to the rescue. Duante Culpepper led BOFD to the 2003 title. Peyton Manning had a record breaking season in 2004 for the Colts and Da Bears.

Perhaps this is good news for Bushwood (Manning), BOFD (Culpepper), and Da Bears (McNabb).

This year, three QB’s were taken among the first seven picks. Last season, Manning was the only QB taken in the first 17 selections. Five players were drafted in the first round for the second straight year (Tomlinson, Alexander, Holmes, Manning, Moss). For the second straight year, Bill Hornyak drafted Terrell Owens in the third round after he fell due to various concerns.
